PROJECT OVERVIEW

We recently completed the installation of 16 well head chambers on behalf of WJ Ground Source Water Solutions within a fully operational hospital environment, demonstrating our ability to deliver complex ground engineering works in highly sensitive settings. The project comprised eight 2400mm diameter concrete ring chambers installed to a depth of 3.6 metres and eight 2100mm borehole chambers constructed to the same specification, all supported by a designed system of interlocking sheet piles and hydraulic bracing to ensure excavation stability and structural integrity. Working at significant depth within a live healthcare facility required meticulous planning, strict safety controls, coordinated logistics, and close collaboration with hospital management to minimise noise, vibration, and disruption to critical services. Delivered on programme and without incident, the scheme highlights our expertise in deep excavation, temporary works engineering, and our commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety and professionalism in challenging operational environments

WHAT WAS THE CHALLENGE?

Delivering deep excavation works within a fully operational hospital environment presented significant logistical and safety challenges. The installation of 16 well head chambers required excavations to depths of up to 3.6 metres while ensuring the stability of surrounding ground and protecting nearby infrastructure. Operating within a live healthcare setting also meant strict limitations on noise, vibration, access, and working hours to avoid disruption to critical hospital services, patients, and staff. Careful coordination with hospital management and other contractors was essential to maintain safe access routes and ensure that all works complied with stringent health and safety requirements.

Sustainability Commitment

At Aztec Construction Midlands, sustainability is at the heart of how we build. We recognise our responsibility to protect the environment and contribute to a more sustainable future for the construction industry.

By combining innovation, expertise, and environmental responsibility, we ensure that every project contributes not only to our clients’ success — but also to a more sustainable future for all.

THE SOLUTION

To address these challenges, a robust temporary works design was implemented, incorporating a system of interlocking sheet piles with hydraulic bracing to provide excavation stability and structural integrity at depth. Detailed planning and phased installation allowed works to progress safely while maintaining hospital operations. Close collaboration with hospital stakeholders ensured that logistics, deliveries, and working practices were carefully managed to minimise disruption. Strict safety controls, regular monitoring, and clear communication between all parties enabled the team to maintain safe working conditions throughout the project.
