PROJECT OVERVIEW
Our Cath Lab team performs about 450 cardiac catheterisation procedures every year with 350 being interventional or therapeutic cardiac keyhole surgeries. These procedures are performed under x-ray guidance with two separate x-ray tubes, due to the complexity of the procedures.
The new biplane facility, which was funded by the NHS Capital budget, will improve the quality of the diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterisation procedures in children and young people with congenital heart disease (CHD).
WHAT WAS THE CHALLENGE?
The hospital’s previous Cath Lab technology had reached the limits of its capabilities in managing the increasing complexity of paediatric cardiac cases. Key challenges included:
- Outdated imaging equipment that limited visual clarity during intricate procedures.
- High equipment demand, requiring multiple machines and screens for electrophysiological studies, creating inefficiencies.
- The need for improved integration of diagnostic and interventional technologies to support the growing caseload and complexity of CHD patients.
- Maintaining service continuity during the refurbishment process without disrupting critical cardiac care services.

The £2.1 million NHS Capital-funded upgrade delivered a fully modernised Cath Lab equipped with biplane angiographic imaging technology, allowing simultaneous imaging from two X-ray sources. This significantly enhances visualisation during complex cardiac interventions and supports real-time decision-making.
